🏡 Context
Our client, Helvetia, approached our agency to rework their waste management app. They were satisfied with its performance but it was only intended for internal use. Helvetia aims to sell it to other companies and was aware that the app was not completed and required improvements in functionality and appearance.
1️⃣ Audit of existing
The app was built for two personas that were not clearly established by our client. One persona was Morgan, who represented the site operator of Helvetia and had the objective of discarding his company’s waste. The other persona was Patrick, the CEO of a transport company, who was in charge of picking up the waste and driving it to the sorting facility. There were two apps, one for each persona.
Before beginning the design thinking process, I conducted an ergonomic audit of both the Morgan and Patrick apps.
Here is the conclusion we could define:
👉 App simple to use and onboard but some technical bugs required fixing.
👉 The information hierarchy needed clarification, especially for Patrick's persona app.
👉The overall UX writing was quite clear.
👉 There was a significant need for UI improvement.
For this use case, I’ll mainly showcase the Morgan app. Otherwise, it would be a very, very, very lengthy use case, and that’s not what we want 😉.
2️⃣ Empathize
To empathize to our main users Morgan I organized a proto persona workshop. Our client has asked us to consider a secondary user, whom the app has to seduce as he was part of their customer’s buying process- Ludovic, the key account manager. I conducted user interviews specifically for him with three users recommended by our customer. Here are the formalized personas.
Regarding Ludovic’s frustrations, we understood that we could easily integrate his needs into the Morgan app with some personalized improvements. This was good news because it will save a lot of time and money.
We wanted to gain a deeper understanding of where issues may have arisen during his working process. To do so, we engaged in a comprehensive user journey exercise. Our main persona, Morgan, was the focus of this journey. By conducting this exploration, we were able to gain valuable insights into the challenges that Morgan may have faced in their day to day work. We were also able to identify specific pain points, roadblocks, and areas for improvement. This exercise allowed us to better understand the entire process, from start to finish.
3️⃣ Ideation
In order to provide the best solutions for our users, we took a collaborative approach and brainstormed potential solutions for our personas. As we reviewed Ludovic and Morgan’s challenges, we confirm some similarities as they both are working in the same organization. Based on this, we made the decision to merge their problems and create a solution that works for both of them. This approach not only saves time in coming up with solutions, but also ensures that we remain consistent in our solutions. By merging their problems, we were able to come up with a cohesive strategy that will help both Ludovic and Morgan overcome their challenges and achieve their objectives.
4️⃣ Prototype
The brainstorming session that we conducted previously has significantly contributed towards aiding us in determining a set of solutions that we can prioritize for the development of our next minimum viable product iteration.
Now that we had our MVP features, it was time to create a good product architecture. I organized the product with regards to the user journey of our personas and the importance of each step made.
During the prototyping process, the sketching phase played a crucial role as it provided the team with an opportunity to re-imagine the user interface without compromising the quality and integrity of the previous version. I was able to create a new design that incorporated fresh ideas while still maintaining the core features and benefits of the previous version.
During the final stage of our project, we had an incredible opportunity to take part in a Presidential Workshop, which spanned the course of an entire day. It was truly an exciting experience, as we had the privilege of collaborating with both our invaluable customers and our carefully crafted personas straight from Figma. This was an amazing opportunity to receive immediate and constructive feedback from those who use and interact with our product, allowing us to make the necessary adjustments to better serve their needs.
3️⃣ Testing
During the final stage of our project, we had the opportunity to organize a workshop in Helvetia office in Genève, which spanned the course of an entire day. It was truly an exciting experience, as we had the privilege of collaborating with both our invaluable customers and our carefully crafted personas straight from Figma. This was an efficient and constructive way to receive immediate and constructive feedback from those who use and interact with our product, allowing us to make the necessary adjustments to better serve their needs.
